Web page best practices and text formatting
Page and file name conventions
- User lowercase text
- Try using four words or less
- Use dashes to connect multiple words and avoid using underscores. Example: test-webpage-example
Headings
-
The style of each heading level is controlled by the stylesheet of your website. (Your stylesheet can be found at /stylesheet in your page list.)
-
Start with an H2 and work down from there. A subhead of an H2 section would then be an H3. H1 headings are for your page titles only.
- When writing your headings always use sentence case
Text emphasis
-
Highlight text within a paragraph using bold or italics. Remember that italics will be read as such (with emphasis) by a screenreader.
-
Small quotes or facts can be called out using the blockquote style.
-
Changing the font color is not recommended for accessibility purposes.
-
Red font can be used for indicating an emergency or special note.
-
Links
-
Links should be embedded when possible
-
Rewrite sentences using "Click here" to incorporate the link in a more descriptive way (call to action).
Example - Incorrect: To be directed to the temporary site for the 2019 Bioactive Lipids Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida, please click HERE.
Correct: View the temporary 2019 Bioactive Lipids Conference Site -
Indicate the file format if linking to a non browser-friendly format (PDF, DOC, XLS, etc)
Example: Download our brochure for more information (PDF)
